Kumi Hiroi

1979*, NL/JP

Kumi Hiroi is a Japanese artist based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. She works with a variety of media, including text, photography, video, textile and glass, on the theme of the gaze, which is not just about seeing, but also about how we perceive objects.

In recent years, she has been interested in the relationship between humans and the environment – how people perceive the environment – and has investigated how humans have so far adjusted nature for their own benefit and convenience. She combines her imagination with literature research and fieldwork on region-specific culture, history and environment to create works that carefully depict the complex layers of the subjects under investigation and critique their underlying structures.
