Sabine Kongsted is a Danish sculptor, performer, set designer, furniture designer and carpenter. Sabine’s work is an interplay between an abstract modernist language and a poetic figurative language. It is located in the split and at a point between a constructivist and an existential unfolding.
Sabine spreads her skills in different artistic languages and productively explores this fusion by questioning the clash between the languages.
She values good craftsmanship. For her it is a deep experience and a tool that brings art up to a level that, due to the high professionalism of the craft, may seem, like profound architecture, „unattainable“, not in an elitist sense, but in a mysterious sense. The craft preserves and supports the character, philosophy, strength and integrity of art. Therefore, in order to sharpen her craft, she is now, alongside her artistic practice, studying to become a carpenter.
Sabine often uses wood to construct abstract sculptures, where a rigid planet and furniture-like form reflects the human need for control and function. But in the abstraction of the form and with elements of movement and continuity, there is also a hint of drama and dreams. Because drama is seductive and because dreams live on in the viewer.
With glue and plastic she shapes figurative sculptures. Sabine aims, with her clothing-like sculptures made of glue, to express a complex beauty; here beauty becomes difficult to achieve and the body neglected, because the material does not really allow one to wear them. They stick to the body and the sculpture has a changed afterlife.
There is an inherent strangeness in her work that seeks shelter in distant landscapes, which is why Sabine this autumn attends the AIR programme at Fundaziun Nairs. Here she will dive into the mountain landscape and the stimulating architecture that surrounds Fundaziun Nairs, as an activating framework for her sculptural development.
Sabine graduated from the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam in 2014 and has since then been working as an artist in Copenhagen and Lisbon.
