Maartje Folkeringa

1978*, Niederlande

Maartje Folkeringa creates sculptures, reliefs, and everything in between as she explores non-verbal communication and the inner world. She builds a colorful and tactile universe by focusing on concentration, attention, association, and intuition. Folkeringa’s artistic practice is labour-intensive; she often uses handmade crafts, contrasting with the rapid pace of contemporary life. During her residency at Fundaziun Nairs, Folkeringa delves into the work of Swiss artist, researcher, and healer Emma Kunz.

Maartje Folkeringa studied at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy (Bachelor) and the Sandberg Institute (Master), both in Amsterdam. She attended artist-in-residence programs at Instituto Buena Bista in Curaçao, Make in Eindhoven, and the European Ceramic Centre in Oisterwijk. Works have been exhibited in the Netherlands and abroad and are part of collections like Museum Jan Cunen, AkzoNobel Art Foundation, Curaçao Centre for Contemporary Art, Museum Boijmans van Beuningen, Erasmus University, and SKY culture in China. Since 2015, Folkeringa lectures fine art at HKU, University of the Arts Utrecht.

This residency is made possible by the Mondriaan Fund.
